At Upwell Health Collective, we offer personalised Clinical Pilates sessions in private and group classes. Each individual is assessed in a one-on-one session with an experienced Physiotherapist who has undertaken industry-leading Pilates Practitioner training as well as Upwell’s specialised internal training programs.

Your Upwell Physiotherapist will listen to your history, current situation, and goals. They will then observe your posture and analyse your movements, using specific tests and real-time imaging to view your deeper core muscles (as needed). Based on these findings and your feedback, a program will then be designed to address your needs and achieve the best results for you.

What is Clinical Pilates?

Clinical Pilates is a form of low-impact, full-body exercise that provides a wide range of benefits, including increased strength, flexibility, balance and coordination, while also addressing injury recovery when applicable.

Clinical Pilates is no longer an exercise modality used purely for injury recovery. Anyone who is interested in improving core strength, balance, fitness, strength and range of motion can benefit from practising Clinical Pilates. The movements can range from very basic with only a mat to more complex movements with equipment like a Reformer, Trapeze Table or Wonder Chair. There’s something for everyone!

Benefits of Clinical Pilates

  • Strengthens core muscles and pelvic girdle
  • Improves flexibility and range of motion
  • Strengthens the mind-body connection and coordination
  • Helps reduce stress and improve your mood
  • Improves tone and body composition for optimal function
  • Reduces back pain
  • Lowers your risk of injury by improving strength, balance and coordination

There are dozens of benefits associated with modern Pilates programs. The impact of consistent Pilates participation has been studied in depth over the last century and research shows that it improves cardiorespiratory function, increases energy levels, boosts immune functioning,  and can even help prevent menstrual pain.

All of these benefits combined with the low-impact, low-risk nature of Pilates make it an excellent exercise option for anyone wanting to improve their general health and well-being. Participating in regular pilates classes will have a positive impact on your life in more ways than one.

More About Clinical Pilates

Clinical Pilates Camberwell

Our Clinical Pilates sessions offer injured clients a unique rehabilitation program that is tailored to their specific presentation and goals. Unlike general Fitness Pilates, Clinical Pilates involves very specific routines that will help individual patients reach a specific goal. This often includes managing pain, rebuilding strength, and improving movement after an injury.

Every clinical program begins with a personal assessment by a physiotherapist. They gather your information, learn about your medical history, perform physical tests, and observe your movements. Your physiotherapist will then teach you everything you need to know about the programs and the equipment before you begin classes.

Reformer Pilates Camberwell

When Joseph Pilates first created Pilates the mat was the only piece of equipment used. He would later invent several different Pilates apparatuses to make exercises easier and more efficient. The most popular still used today is the reformer. Reformer pilates exercises are excellent for rehabilitation purposes & general fitness & wellness.

Pilates Frequently Asked Questions

What kind of workout is Clinical Pilates?

Pilates helps you feel stronger, more confident, and empowered. The controlled movements enhance your balance and core strength. This helps to support the structures of the body including bones and joints as well as mental health and community wellness.

What is Clinical Pilates good for?

Pilates is the perfect workout for your whole body. It focuses on building core, lower-body and upper-body strength while increasing flexibility in all areas of movement. It also improves strength, balance and coordination, including the mind-body connection.

Is Pilates good for weight loss?

Pilates is a great way to build lean muscle and can be combined with resistance training and cardio workouts for complete fitness and weight management plan.

Is Pilates harder than yoga?

Pilates is a more intense form of exercise than yoga with different goals. Through frequent Pilates exercise, you can achieve your tailored strength and fitness goals.

What are the disadvantages of Pilates?

Pilates exercises are great for your health and fitness, but they can also come with risks. If you don’t maintain proper form while participating in Pilates there’s a risk of injury. It is important to consult with comprehensively trained Pilates Practitioners. Physiotherapists with Pilates certifications and qualifications have the most comprehensive all-round training in the care of musculoskeletal, pain and other conditions.

What is the best time of day to do Pilates?

Pilates is a great workout for the morning as it gets your blood moving and wakes you up giving you that extra boost of energy. Some clients also love doing a Pilates session in their lunch break or after a hard day at work. Pilates clients have their own preferences on when to attend Pilates.

Is 20 minutes of Pilates a day enough?

If you’re following the right repertoires, then 20-minutes of Pilates a day is more than enough time to get your Pilates groove on! At Upwell, we offer 60-minute sessions to get the most out of your time in Pilates, however, this is not necessary everyday.

How long does it take to see results from Pilates?

You’ll start to feel the physical benefits within three to six weeks of Pilates participation, but mental and emotional benefits can be felt much sooner. After just one or two sessions with us, you might find yourself feeling more energised, connected and supported in reaching your health and wellness goals.

Can Pilates change your body shape?

Pilates is an excellent exercise modality to assist with muscle definition across all muscles in your body and can also be utilised to target specific areas of focus for the individual client.
