5 tips to get you moving in 2018

Another year has begun and so comes the opportunity to wipe the slate clean and kick-start healthy habits to help you live your best life.

As a centre for movement and musculoskeletal care, Upwell helps you to move safely and in way that feels right for you. And whether you’re 18 or 80… then we’re here to help.

Here’s five ways to get you moving in 2018.

Tip #1 Set your theme for the year.

The best place to start anything new, is at the beginning. So, spend some time thinking about what tone or theme you want to set for your year.

Think about how you want to feel in 2018. Whatever word comes to mind when you ask yourself this, is your theme for 2018. Maybe you want to feel: stable, strong, energised or calm.

Choose your theme for the year, write it down and keep it close by for an easy reminder – like in your wallet, on the fridge or next to your bed.

Then you can go about making practical lifestyle decisions or setting goals to support this theme or feeling. For example, if your goal is to feel “stable” then perhaps one of your goals is to work on your lower limb strength, which will help you to be more strong and agile – being so can be very helpful when you’re busy running after the little people in your life! Maybe you will buy new walking shoes or get those bunions finally seen to.

Be as specific as possible when setting your theme. The more specific you are, the more targeted your goals the set to support your theme will be.

Tip #2 Tend to any aches or pains

Remove any potential obstacles and finally get that niggly knee pain, or tight shoulder looked at. See a physiotherapist and work with them to understand exactly what’s going on in your body so you can move, assured you’re doing so safely and within your limits.

Expect nothing less than a detailed treatment pathway and timeframe that will get you back to your baseline and ready to build on it as soon as possible.

This is our approach to care at Upwell and we know that’s how you get the best outcomes.

Tip #3 Get your fitness assessed

Careful and considered movement is the best form of medicine – especially when it comes to managing a musculoskeletal condition or injury.

Put one foot on the pathway to movement and book a one-on-one consultation with an exercise physiologist (EP).

An EP is a highly qualified exercise scientist who understands in detail how and what makes your body function and move. They prescribe exercise like a doctor prescribes medicine, carefully selecting and tailoring programs to meet your individual needs.

Consider your exercise physiologist to be your specialist when it comes to moving safely and maximising your wellbeing. If you haven’t exercised for a while – or if you have an existing illness or condition– we would recommend seeing a GP first.

Tip #4 Get your feet ready to move

Now that you’ve decided 2018 is the year you’re going to start moving – I’d recommend that you check your feet and shoes are ready to carry you the journey.

Make an appointment with a podiatrist and bring along your walking and running shoes. As a lower-limb expert, a podiatrist can check the biomechanics of your feet and legs and offer you any advice to achieve optimum movement and functionality. They can also check that your shoes are supporting your feet in the best way possible.

Get your feet right, and the rest of your body is more likely to follow.

Tip #5 Charge your calm side

Balance your movement in 2018 with activities that help to calm your nervous system. Think regular massages or yoga that focus on restoration and rejuvenation.

At Upwell, we offer remedial and relaxation styles of massage and gentle styles of yoga like restorative yoga, yoga Nidra and yin yoga which are practises that rest the body but engage the mind. Our yoga is coupled with gentle meditation for a total mindful experience.

It is in the non-doing that the magic happens – so try it for yourself and strike that much needed balance in your movement diet.
