PHYSIOTHERAPY CAMBERWELL FAQs

Everything you need to know about Physiotherapy at Upwell Health Collective in Camberwell — from parking and appointments to insurance and services.

Q: Do I need a referral to see a physio in Camberwell?

No — you don't need a GP referral to book a physiotherapy appointment at Upwell Health in Camberwell. As a private patient, you can book directly online or call us. The only time you'll need a GP referral is if you're claiming under a Medicare Chronic Disease Management (CDM) plan (formerly called an EPC plan), a Department of Veterans' Affairs (DVA) plan, WorkCover, or TAC. If you have private health insurance with extras cover, no referral is needed — we process your rebate on the spot with HICAPS.

How much does physiotherapy cost, and can I claim through private health insurance or Medicare?

At Upwell Health Collective, we offer longer, more thorough physiotherapy sessions than most Camberwell clinics — because real care takes time. We accept all major private health funds and offer on-the-spot HICAPS claiming, so you receive your rebate immediately. If you have a chronic condition (lasting 6+ months), you may be eligible for up to 5 Medicare-subsidised allied health sessions per year through a CDM plan from your GP. We also accept NDIS, TAC, and WorkCover clients. For current pricing, visit our fees & rebates page or call us directly on (03) 8849 9096.

What happens during my first physiotherapy appointment at Upwell Health Collective?

Your first session is longer than a standard follow-up, giving us time to get to know you properly. Your physiotherapist will start by asking about your pain, injury history, lifestyle, and goals — because at Upwell, we treat the whole person, not just the injury.

From there, we'll perform a hands-on physical assessment including movement, strength, and joint testing, usign our state-of-the-art VALD Pressure Sensor Systems to identify the root cause of your symptoms. You'll leave with a clear diagnosis, a personalised treatment plan, and practical strategies you can start using immediately. We also set you up with our digital rehab app so your recovery continues between sessions. Wear comfortable clothing that allows access to the area we need to assess.

How many physiotherapy sessions will I need to recover?

It depends on your condition, its severity, and how long you've had symptoms — but we'll give you an honest estimate at your first appointment. As a general guide: minor sprains or acute pain often improve within 2–4 sessions over a few weeks; soft tissue injuries typically take 6–8 weeks; and chronic or post-surgical conditions may require a structured program over several months.

The biggest factor in your recovery speed? Consistency — patients who attend their scheduled sessions and complete their home exercises consistently recover faster and experience fewer setbacks. Our goal at Upwell is always to get you better and independent as quickly as possible, not to keep you coming back unnecessarily.

What's the difference between physiotherapy, exercise physiology, and clinical Pilates?

Great question — and at Upwell Health Collective in Camberwell, we offer all services under one roof, which is a real advantage for your recovery. Physiotherapy focuses on diagnosing and treating injuries, pain, and movement problems using hands-on manual therapy, targeted exercises, and education.

Exercise physiology uses prescribed exercise programs to manage chronic health conditions like diabetes, heart disease, and obesity — often in conjunction with physio. Clinical Pilates at Upwell is led by physiotherapists and focuses on building core stability, improving posture, and preventing injury recurrence in small, personalised group sessions. Many of our patients benefit from a combination of all three.

Our team works together to create a seamless, coordinated care plan tailored to your needs.

What conditions do physiotherapists at Upwell Health treat?

Our Camberwell physiotherapists treat a wide range of musculoskeletal, sports, , arthitic, post-operative and chronic pain conditions, including: back and neck pain, sciatica and disc injuries, shoulder pain and rotator cuff injuries, knee injuries including ACL rehabilitation, hip and groin pain, headaches and migraines, arthritis (both osteoarthritis and rheumatoid), post-surgical rehabilitation (joint replacements, spinal surgery, ligament repairs), sports injuries and return-to-play programs, workplace injuries, and women's health conditions.

We also use advanced technology like our VALD performance force plates & real-time ultrasound to support complex rehabilitation. If you're unsure whether physiotherapy is right for your condition, call us on (03) 8849 9096 — we're happy to advise before you book.

Additionally - check out our Conditions Page for a full list and education of some conditions we treat at Upwell Health Collective, Camberwell.

Is it normal to feel sore after a physiotherapy session?

Yes — mild soreness for 24–48 hours after physiotherapy is completely normal, particularly if your physio has worked on tight muscles, stiff joints, or introduced new exercises your body isn't used to yet. Think of it like the feeling after a good workout — it's your body adapting and responding to treatment.

However, if the soreness feels sharp, gets significantly worse, or doesn't ease within a couple of days, let your physiotherapist know. At Upwell, we monitor your response closely and adjust treatment intensity to match your body's tolerance, so every session moves you forward without unnecessary discomfort.
