Do I Need a Doctor’s Referral for Physiotherapy?

Are you planning to visit a physiotherapist? Do you want to know whether a doctor’s referral is needed for your visit? In this blog post, we will explore this topic and when you need to visit a physiotherapist.

Is a Doctor’s Referral Required for Physiotherapy?

You do not need the referral of a doctor to schedule a visit to a physiotherapist. You can visit them without a referral from your GP. You will need to make the payment however, if you have private health insurance, you can swipe your card and then, you will need to make the remaining payment on your own.

However, you do need a referral from a GP to a physiotherapist in case you want to take advantage of the Medicare rebate. Many people are not aware that they can take advantage of the Medicare rebate up to 5 times in a calendar year if they are suffering from a chronic illness and have been referred by their GP.

If you do not want the rebate and want to visit a physiotherapist, you are free to do that but you will have to take care of the payment on your own.

When Should You Visit A Physiotherapist?

Most people don’t think that they will ever need to visit a physiotherapist as there is a perception that they only cater to professional athletes. While that is true, a physiotherapist can assist in numerous situations. Here are a few reasons why you should visit a physiotherapist.

1). Recurring pain

If you have experienced trauma or suffered an injury, it is most likely that you will experience some pain for a certain period of time. It may last for a few days to a few weeks. However, once the injury has healed, the pain should go away.

If you are still experiencing that pain sensation and have not been able to find relief, it means the situation has become chronic. A certified physiotherapist can be of great help in providing relief from chronic pain issues.

2). Balance issues

If you are having a problem maintaining balance, this typically means that you have some inner ear issues as the inner ear plays a big role in maintaining balance. A physiotherapist can help you with vestibular rehabilitation.

They will draw out a unique treatment plan after a thorough examination. These treatment plans typically consist of a series of eye, head, and neck exercises.

3). Mobility issues

If you feel that your body has lost some degree of mobility or flexibility or you are having trouble making smooth movements, you should schedule a visit to a trained physiotherapist.

For instance, if you are not able to touch your toes, this means that your mobility and flexibility are somehow being impacted so you will therefore benefit significantly by visiting a physiotherapist.

4). Uncontrolled urination

This is a common disorder that affects senior citizens though it can happen at any age. A physiotherapist can recommend specific pelvic floor exercises that can help you with this condition.

5). Diabetes management

People suffering from diabetes need to take good care of their bodies. They not only need to take the necessary medication but also keep themselves physically fit by exercising regularly. Regular exercise goes a long way in maintaining optimum blood sugar levels. A physiotherapist can help you with maintaining your independence and mobility.

6). Training

If you are having general flexibility or strength issues and you want to start a new training regimen, it would be appropriate to visit a physiotherapist. They can devise an exercise regimen to help you become strong and fit.

Final Thoughts

Overall, you do not need a referral from your GP to visit a physiotherapist if you do not want to take advantage of the Medicare rebate. A referral is only needed when you want to get a Medicare rebate.

While professional athletes regularly visit physiotherapists for recovery and rehabilitation, you can also benefit from a visit in case you are suffering from balance issues, mobility issues, chronic pain issues or some of the other problems discussed above.
